The 9 days to
Christmas - a Journey of Faith in Wonder and Awe at the Birth of the Promised
One
The Original Catholic Novena
For Joseph and the very pregnant Mary, the
usual 4-day journey to Bethlehem on foot took them 9 days. We celebrate their
9-day pilgrimage in the Advent Season by abruptly ending the first part of
Advent on December 16th to make room for a commemoration of this journey from
December 17th to 25th. Joseph led Mary out of Nazareth on the 17th and arrived
in the stable after midnight between the 24th and the 25th; so it was in the wee
hours of the morning on the 25th that Joseph set Mary up in the stable and that
she very shortly gave birth to Jesus. Very soon afterwards the shepherds arrived
with their amazing tale of angels from Heaven bringing them a message of wonder
and songs of joy and glory to God. This traditional understanding of what
happened made the "Midnight Mass" Liturgy special for Catholics, giving them a
sense of being present at the scene of Jesus' birth in the middle of the night.
